There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look good or at least to improve one’s body appearance. It’s actually a legitimate endeavor. But wanting to achieve a resemblance with a particular body type – one that may not be at all what your own physical makeup originally looks like – is bound to be a self-defeating endeavor.
You’re using fitness drills, probably experiencing boredom in the process, in an attempt to modify the external shape of your tissues to match a subjective cosmetic convention. What you’re seeking is, in fact, not only a rather subjective look, but also one that is, in so many cases, out of reach, not because you aren’t capable of commitment to achieve your goals, but simply because you can only change who you physically and naturally are that much.
What’s the point of obsessively looking at yourself in the mirror, probably with dissatisfaction? As a matter of fact, many fitness aficionados that emphasize physical appearance first or even exclusively are never truly satisfied by what their body looks like, and may even suffer from a chronically low perception of their physique, even when it looks good – a condition called “body dysmorphic syndrome.”
Why choose a route that has proven to be frustrating and disappointing to an overwhelming majority of people, when you could invest the same amount of energy in learning to be an efficient mover? You would also become physically capable, enjoy your practice, and get substantial improvements to your physiology, increased mobility, balance, coordination and ease of movement, and ultimately natural improvements of your body’s appearance as well.
Don’t you want the function more than you want the looks?
The function is what your body can DO that serves you well in your day to day life; and also in challenging circumstances. It is also the mental clarity, alertness, focus, composure and fortitude you must have to operate such function. It’s the robustness, health, and resilience of your tissues and overall physiology. It’s your physical well-being and levels of energy throughout the day. That’s what I call “function.”
If you cannot move your body in meaningful ways, if you are physiologically imbalanced and fragile, if you don’t actually feel content and confident in your life, if you have low levels of energy, will minor changes in your body image make that big of a difference in your happiness and quality of life? I bet it won’t.
Choose function first. A more capable, resilient, and energetic body will ensue. A clearer, more self-confident, stronger mind will ensue. A better looking physique will certainly ensue as well, especially if you also practice other fundamental aspects of the Natural Movement lifestyle such as sleeping well, reducing stress, avoiding inflammatory foods, etc. Most importantly, a better self and a better LIFE will be the best reward of all!
