In our interview with Dave, you’ll learn why he decided to adopt MovNat® well into his 70s, what the community means to him, and why helping others is at the heart and soul of everything he does.
What role has nature played in your life?
My first introduction to having fun in the woods was when I was 14 and used to run through them to get to basketball practice. The gym was about a 30-minute walk, so I started vaulting over trees and hurdling streams to make the trek more fun.
Why is mobility and being active so important to you?
A couple years ago I had a profoundly serious medical experience that landed me in the hospital for five days. After I recovered, my doctor told me that if I hadn’t been in the physical condition I was in, the outcome would have been much different.
Today, I find myself thinking about that experience often and how lucky I am to be living such a beautiful and active life with my wife.
Can you tell us about your day-to-day life?
After 30 years of owning and operating a financial planning business, my wife and I are now retired and enjoying every moment of it together. I am on the golf course regularly and she is either spinning, doing Pilates, or golfing alongside me. From time to time, you can also find us running on the roads near our home.
How did you find out about MovNat and why did you decide to get into it?
About four years ago, the trainer I was working with at a golf club suggested I look into MovNat to help shake up my fitness routine. After watching as many videos online as I could, I started calling gyms in my area. All it took was an hour with my MovNat trainer, Seth Budai, to know I had found a program that would be better than any I had done before.
You got your MovNat Level 1 Certification last year. Could you tell us what that experience was like?
Several things come to mind, but I was particularly struck by the friendly attitude of everyone participating in the certification program (trainers and participants alike). We were all helping each other succeed — which immediately created a sense of community.
The MovNat Level 1 Certification is your entry point into Natural Movement Fitness. It equips you with the knowledge, skills, and methods you need to transform your movement & fitness and build real world capability from the ground up. You’ll learn not only the movements in the official MovNat curriculum, but also the methods to apply those movements to your unique needs, goals, and circumstances.
What is life like now that you’ve spent a few years practicing MovNat?
After practicing MovNat for several years, I realize there are still so many movements I could learn. And more importantly, movements and techniques I want to learn properly. Which is really important to me. I believe the process of learning new things is what keeps us young at heart — no matter your age.
Some would say you’ve drank the MovNat Kool-aid (which we love) – why do you think that is?
[Dave Laughs] I think there is a lot of value in MovNat’s approach to strength and fitness. Especially for the senior population that struggles to improve their balance, strength, posture, agility, and to walk properly.
If you had to share any piece of advice with other people who want to make positive changes in their life, what would you tell them?
That’s an easy one… I’d tell people: “Try the MovNat approach to physical fitness, you might like it after all. What do you have to lose?”
What goals do you have for the coming year?
I would like to utilize my talents to train people, especially people 65+, how to avoid falling and injuring themselves.
I actually just hosted my first workshop. It was incredibly rewarding to see people doing exercises they hadn’t done before and enjoying every moment.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?
Yes. I am a lucky man. I have my health, a beautiful wife, and a handful of mentors that taught me that true joy comes from helping other people. Think about it for a minute… if I were to help you, you’d feel inclined to help someone else. In turn, that person would help another person. And on and on it would go. We’re all wired the same — to want to help others in one way or another.
I guess, I would hope people realize that this cycle of helping one another doesn’t have to stop. Each one of us has an infinite amount of power to make a big difference.
