1st Annual NYC Barefoot Run recap

I have just returned from a trip to New York City, where I held a successful One Day MovNat Fundamentals clinic in Central Park, but also attended the 1st annual NYC barefoot run. It was a fantastic non-competitive run, with around 300 barefoot runners.  All of which were totally thrilled to gather on Governor Island on a very sunny day for this first major barefoot event in the US.

By 8:30am we had all gathered by the starting line and after John Durant spoke to the crowd in his megaphone, off we all went!

I made my 10 mile run a bit more fun and challenging by including additional natural moves, like balancing, crawling and at some point climbing over a tree branch.  On my second-to-last lap, a crowd of over 20 runners had gathered, some trying to pass the obstacle too and others watching and supporting.  It gave me the opportunity to help a few of them by sharing some MovNat techniques.  I was happy to receive a lot of positive feedback at the end and it seems many started to realize that there is more to moving naturally than only running  barefoot!

I was glad to see my good friend Barefoot Ted again, but also to meet many new people.  Among them being Jason Robillard, Daniel Howell – both authors of barefoot running books – and last but not least, Daniel Lieberman, evolutionary biologist and also known as the “barefoot professor”.   Professor Lieberman, an experienced barefoot runner himself, is leading exciting research on barefoot running at Harvard University.  His knowledge is quite impressive and I invite you to take a look at his video below.

Many thanks to John Durant and his sister, Maggie Durant, that have worked so hard to organize this event, but also to all participants and sponsors who, together, made the event possible.

Colin Pistell, MovNater

At the Terra Plana store.  After a fascinating presentation by Dr. Daniel Lieberman, we had a round table discussion with the audience on all things barefoot with Barefoot Ted, Jason Robillard, Dr. Daniel Howell and myself.

PS:  Did I forget to mention all members of the MovNat family that did the barefoot run?  John and Maggie Durant, Melissa McEwen, Barefoot Ted, Jeff Cramblit, Richard and Nicki Sciolino, Colin Pistell and Leon Rawlings!

  1. Im so happy to hear the event was such a success!! Sounds like you made an impression on lots of people too! It must be an amazing feeling being with so many people who share an interest in reconnecting with their natural instincts. Hopefully next year Ill be there too!

  2. Looks like it was great Erwan! We’re looking to do something similar here soon in East Tennessee. We’ve had our first five-fingers 5k (about 100 participants) and we’d like to move on to a barefoot 5k this coming spring.

Is there any chance that a video was taken of the discussion at Terra Plana? I’m sure there is lots of beneficial information to be consumed!

    Thanks and take care!
